Thorough business understanding requires a formal construct for obtaining, documenting, and displaying that understanding. Many approaches have been used in recent years with varying degrees of success. The most prominent approaches involve the use of interrogatives for obtaining understanding, and frameworks for documenting that understanding. However, those approaches have weaknesses.
The first weakness is the use of six interrogatives, which results in a dilemma about what those interrogatives represent. The second weakness is a two-dimensional framework which contributes to that dilemma. A new approach is needed to resolve the dilemma and provide a set of interrogatives and a framework that fully support an organization’s business understanding.
That new approach involves the addition of a seventh interrogative. A Which interrogative is added to identify the business activity that is the focus of understanding. The What interrogative then provides a description of that business activity. The How interrogative represents the combined data/processes resource. Those changes resolve part of the dilemma.
Business activity, identified by the new Which interrogative, becomes a third dimension on the framework. Business activity is a hierarchy of an organization’s business activities, from the organization down to the most detailed business activity the organization chooses to define. Any business activity in that hierarchy can be readily understood and documented.
The new Business Understanding Framework, with its three dimensions and seven interrogatives, provides a formal, interrogative-driven, understanding of an organization’s business activities. That understanding is documented and can be displayed in any format, at any time, to any audience. It forms the foundation for understanding and managing an organization’s business in a dynamic business environment.
The Data / Processes Resource Management series presents concepts, principles, and techniques, formal terms with denotative definitions, and the benefits of evolving to formal management of a combined data / processes resource. The series is beneficial for technical data and processes professionals, business professionals, and their respective managers.
